HISTORY OF THE ROOM
Between 1853 and 1950, New Zealand’s Parliament included a second chamber, the Legislative Council (Upper House), consisting of appointed members with the primary role of amending or rejecting bills passed by the House of Representatives. The Legislative Council Chamber’s most important role today is as the venue for the State Opening of Parliament after each general election.
